Atlético Agree €19m Simão Deal

Atlético de Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Simão Sabrosa from Benfica for a fee of around €19m, according to reports in Portugal.

The Spanish outfit have been searching for a right-winger since the end of last season and turned to the former Barça star after being rebufefd in their quest to capture Ricardo Quaresma from Porto.

Negotiations with Benfica are now said to be concluded and the player is ready to accept a four-year contract at Atleti, worth €2.5m-per-season.

Simão asked As Águias to allow him to make the switch and accept the offer as los Colchoneros were not prepared to meet his buy-out clause of €25m.

The 27-year-old did not travel on Benfica’s pre-season trip to Romania and stayed behind, reportedly to close the deal.

Although the transdfer has not yet been officially announced by either club, it is expected that Atlético will do so on their official website soon.

Simão will travel to Madrid early next week for a medical and will then join up with his new team-mates for pre-season training.

Following the completion of the deal with Benfica, Atleti could still press ahead with another move for Quaresma after having their efforts rebuffed earlier this summer by Porto.

Coach Javier Aguirre is counting on Martin Petrov, but the interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City may be too good to turn down and leave a space on the left-wing open.
