Match Report : Manchester United defeats Chelsea on penalties in the Community Shield

Manchester United defeated Chelsea in penalties in the community shield held at the newly assembled Wembley Stadium.

Chelsea started with a relatively weaker team without the likes of Drogba and Terry with the starting line up. They didn't play with any Real striker with Malouda starting as a center forward. Manchester United had a relatively stronger team with Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in attack. The game kicked off slowly with Chelsea exchanging passes in their defense. In the 7th minute Glen Johnson crumpled under Evra's challenge, and required treatment

In the 11th minute Giggs looked to spring Rooney forward but A Cole checked back to defend.It was simply quick thinking and excellent defending by Cole to thwart Rooney's break.

In the 20th minute a superb marauding run down the left wing by Evra saw him cross to the far post for Giggs to fire in a shot that Cech blocked with typical alertness and atheticism.

Carrick fired in a shot wide from a corner kick as Manchester United looked to have pushed the gears early.

In the 26th minute Chelsea had a free-kick, from the right, and Essien's header flashed inches wide of the far post as Mikel threw himself forward but failed to connect. The slightest touch and Chelsea would have been be ahead now.

United took the lead in the 35th minute when Rooney set off on a purposeful run and was unloaded by Ben-Haim. The ex-Bolton man collected a yellow for his efforts. Ronaldo's kick rebounded off the wall, but it is not cleared properly, and Vidic's cross-field pass found Evra on the left. The Frenchman got a vital assist from Ronaldo, cutt in and pulled it back to Ryan Giggs who lashed it high into the net from around the penalty spot. A superbly worked goal that gave Jose Mourinho food for thought. Giggs had not scored at Wembley since playing for England Schoolboys as Ryan Wilson, and has thus fulfiilled a professional ambition.

Rooney got booked in the 45th minute for colliding with Peter Cech.

Chelsea had been enyoing plenty of possession without showing much penetration, but Ashley Cole lofted a teasing ball down the the inside-left channel for Malouda to chase, and the the Frenchman turned Rio Ferdinand and left him floundering as he raced on and tucked the ball expertly into the net beyond Van der Sar for a great equaliser just before half-time.

In the 51st minute Malouda came off and Pizzaro got his debut for Chelsea,in the 59h minute he dispossesed Carrick in midfield and broke forward before feeding Joe Cole o the left. Cole's cross though is overhit and gave Pizarro no chance.

Both team made a lot of substitutions and in the 83rd minute Cech saved crucially as Ronaldo won possession off Mikel and dribbled menancingly in on goal, shephered by Carvalho.

The match went to penalties and Pizarro's spot kick was saved by Van Der Sar. Ferdinand scored from his spot kick , low and hard into Cech's right hand corner.
It was Lampard's turn and Van der Sar saved again! Two out of two for the Dutch keeper, United lead 1-0 - and it was t 2-0 as Carrick also scored to Cech's right.
Wright-Phillips took his, Van der Sar saved again! This is the decisive kick - and Rooney slammed it home to win the Community Shield fot Man Utd.
