Brazil Reach Copa Final After Penalty Shoot-out Victory

Uruguay 2-2 BrazilBrazil defeated Uruguay 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time, and reach the final of the Copa America against the winner of Argentina and Mexico that play on Wednesday.

First Half
The match commenced with an electric pace, and as the minutes went by the Brazilians began to dominate the possession.

In the 13th minute they took the lead through Maicon, who poked the ball into the back of the net immediately after Fabian Carini saved an earlier effort.

The match was temporarily suspended for a power failure, but resumed after both captains agreed on continuing.

In the 41st minute Diego Forlan almost put Uruguay on level terms, but his excellent long distance drive was spectacularly saved by Doni in the Brazil goal.

Only minutes later Uruguay had another opportunity to equalise, but Alvaro Recoba's powerful effort was well kept out by an alert Doni.

Uruguay continued to pile the pressure on the Brazilians, with the good work of an inspired Recoba who swung several dangerous balls into the box.

In the 45th minute Diego Forlan finally put Uruguay on level terms with an outstanding finish after latching onto a rebound in the area.

But in the 54th minute Brazil went back infront when Julio Baptista pushed the ball in from close range after Uruguay couldn't clear a free-kick swung in from the right wing.

Carlos Dunga's side went into the break with a 2-1 lead, despite being dominated by the Uruguayans for large periods of the half.

Second Half

Uruguay started the second half strongly and almost completely dominated the Brazilians for the first twenty minutes of the half. But despite this they couldn't break through a solid Brazilian defense.

But this was until the 70th minute when substitute Sebastian Abreu got them on level terms again, when he shot in at the back post after good work from Forlan on the left side of the box.

After the goal Brazil got back into gear, and started to put pressure on the Uruguayans. Dunga's three substitutes: Fernando, Diego, and Afonso had an impact on the match, but Brazil still couldn't create any dangerous goal-scoring opportunities.

In the final minutes of the match it was Uruguay that had the initiative, but like Brazil they looked happy to settle for the 2-2 draw, and the penalty shoot-outs.

Brazil went on to win the penalty shoot-out 5-4, after Diego Lugano failed to convert Uruguay's final spot-kick.
